Types of sushi

The most famous sushi would be the oval formed sushi, know as nigirizushi. It is the most common sushi to be served in sushi bars or known as kaitenzushi in Japan. On the top of the rice, Fresh seafood, usually raw is placed, and then formed by placing the rice in the palm of one hand and shaping it with the other hand fingers. Certain sushi is tied using seaweed to prevent the topping to be separated from the rice. Topping for sushi can also already been cooked. The toppings are usually tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet) or unagi (eel). Sushi chefs in Japan go through extensive training to learn to make nigiri-zushi.

makizushiMakizushi

Makizushi means rolled sushi, made using bamboo mat, called makisu, resulting cylindrical piece form. Makizushi generally wrapped using seaweed (nori).

But it can also occasionally wrapped using cucumber, soy paper , thin omelette, some even using parsley.

Makizushi usually sliced to six or eight parts, which represents one roll order.

The Origins of Sushi

sushiDoes sushi means raw fish? That is a big mistake. Look up the dictionary. Raw fish in Japanese is sashimi, NOT sushi. The original meaning of the word sushi was sour. It refers to a method used for preserving fish which using rice to cover the fish, seasoned with salt and rice wine vinegar.

The main ingredient is fish? Guess again. The main ingredient used to make sushi is sticky rice, which ironically was discarded at first as the side effect of the fermentation itself.

You can find numerous sushi varieties, and you will not find a single slice of raw fish in it, or even the fish itself. Sushi also using other seafood as topping, or neta in Japanese, such as shellfish, eel, prawn, octopus, squid, crab and even caviar. Nowadays many non sea products are also used, in example egg, turkey and beef. There are even some varieties using fruits and vegetables such as cucumber, avocado, apple and even cheese!!

Colleen trained at The Institute of Nutrition and Health in Bray, Co Wicklow, and also a member of The British Association of Nutritional Therapists. She is also a Master in Psychology.
