Arthritis, the definition
The word arthritis comes from two Greek words: “arthro” which means joint and “itis” which means inflammation. Arthritis means a set of conditions related to the damage of joints, caused by inflammation.
Joints are the meeting places of two bones, for example elbows and knees. Ultimately, in several arthritis types, the joints affected by arthritis can be severely damaged. The fact that arthritis can be painful is correct, but the proper arthritis treatment can make you feel much better, allowing you to keep having an enjoyable life.
Arthritis, the types
There are more than 100 types of arthritis. In some conditions which arthritis appears, other organs might also become affected. These organs are eyes, chest, and skin. Arthritis is also known as the preliminary disease since it is usually followed by another illness. The most frequents are lupus and joints infection.
The two major types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the dominant type of arthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis since this type of arthritis usually suffered by elderly people. This type of arthritis mostly affects larger joints such as back and knees. But young people might also suffer this type of arthritis, usually caused by injury to joints, caused by car or sport accident. This usually take years until the symptoms appear.
Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body’s defense system does not work properly, affecting bones and joints (mostly hands or feet), as well as internal organs. People who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis usually feel sick and tired, and even suffer a fever.
One more type of arthritis that is commonly found is gout. In this case, the inflammation on the joints is caused by crystals deposition of uric acid. Mostly affects the toe, but other joints might also be affected.
Living with arthritis
While rheumatoid arthritis can be cured, osteoarthritis is not. But with proper and correct treatment, one can live their life relatively well. Consulting to a doctor is a must. Correct diagnosis will determine the correct treatment for the particular type of arthritis.
Treatment might vary, depends on the arthritis type suffered. This might involve physical therapy, change of lifestyle, weight control (more weight means more burdens to the joints equals to more pain), exercise, and medications. Orthopedic bracing, joint replacement might be necessary in worse cases.
